Applications are invited for the position of Staff Specialist in Intensive Care at John Hunter Hospital. The successful applicant will join the John Hunter, and greater Newcastle Intensive Care Services team.  The John Hunter Hospital is a major teaching hospital and is the primary tertiary referral centre for trauma in northern NSW, covering all surgical specialties including cardiothoracic.  It includes John Hunter Children’s Hospital, one of the three tertiary Paediatric hospitals in the state.  The busy Intensive Care Unit provides Adult and Paediatric Intensive Care Services and supports a Medical Retrieval Service.   

Newcastle is a coastal city and busy port within easy reach of Sydney.  The population of the Newcastle Greater Metropolitan Area is 540,796.  There are superb surfing beaches and recreational opportunities, and the nearby Hunter Valley is one of Australia’s premier wine producing districts.

What this position offers you?
As the second Respiratory Physician in the region you will be seeking an opportunity to provide your services in a rural environment, including participation with the on call general physician roster at the hospital. Tamworth Hospital provides endoscopic bronchial ultrasound service and a weekly bronchoscopy list. There is local availability of inpatient sleep studies.

 

The Department is well supported by an additional team of 10 physicians in specialties including cardiology, nephrology, rheumatology, medical and radiation oncology, haematology, neurology, gastroenterology, rehabilitation and endocrinology. There are additional FACEM and FICM consultants covering acute presentations to the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit.

Join an outstanding multidisciplinary team in a busy, integrated and rewarding mental health service. Our Psychiatric Emergency Service (PES) provides an assessment unit and 4 short stay PECC beds combined with an 8 bed psychiatric intensive care unit. This provides a service for all teams in Hunter New England Mental Health.

 

PES is co-located with Calvary Mater Newcastle (CMN) – Emergency Department (ED), providing services and a conduit with/from ED to the Mater Mental Health Centre (100 acute beds in total) for people experiencing a mental health crisis, acute mental illness or disorder (first time presentation or recurrent/relapse) and who require mental health assessment, hospital admission, acute inpatient treatment/care and/or referral for support and follow up in the community.

 

PES is a 24 hour, 7 day a week centre-based acute hospital inpatient service made up of Psychiatric Emergency Care Centre; PECC Assessment, PECC Beds Unit and Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) providing access and admission to four 22 bed acute mental health inpatient units: Newcastle Mental Health Unit (NMHU), Lake Macquarie Mental Health Unit (LMMHU), Mental Health Substance Use Unit (MHSUU) and Mental Health Unit for Older People (MHUOP).

 

Applicants must have a medical degree registerable with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. Your ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from all health-related disciplines will assist you in developing strong local links with other health welfare providers. A background of continued professional development and the practice of evidence-based medicine with a commitment initiating research and/or service evaluation will be highly regarded.
