The Commonwealth Government’s Innovative Clinical Teaching and Training Grants Program has provided the capital funding for the development of the Illawarra Shoalhaven Health Education Centre (ISHEC) located adjacent to the Wollongong Hospital at 42 Loftus Street Wollongong.

ISHEC is designed to increase capacity and improve distribution of clinical teaching and training for students, trainees and health professionals for continuing professional development within the Illawarra Shoalhaven region.

This purpose built facility will service the existing health professional community of the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) and will support increases in clinical training placements through the provision of teaching and training to students whilst on hospital placements.

The purpose of this position is to establish and maintain an outstanding clinical skills and simulation service to staff employed and to University Students on placement within the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District.

Palliative Care Staff Specialist 0.8 FTE

Position Summary:

An enthusiastic experienced Staff Specialist in Palliative Medicine is being recruited to implement and develop District-wide the Renal Supportive Care Service along with the Lead Nephrologist for the Renal Supportive Care Program. This program involves an interdisciplinary approach that integrates the skills of renal medicine and palliative care to help patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) to live as well as possible by managing their symptoms and supporting them in living with advanced disease. It is embedded in usual renal care. It also encompasses advance care planning and end-of-life care. The Staff Specialist Palliative Care for Renal Supportive Care will provide specialist outpatient and inpatient consultative support District-wide in Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) as well as participate in the Palliative Care After Hours Roster.

 

This position will additionally have involvement in the clinical management of patients supported by the after-hours palliative care nursing team, with responsibility for providing consultative services in acute hospitals, nursing homes and community settings as directed by the Head of Department and/or District Director of Aged, Rehabilitation and Palliative Care.

 

Training and supervision of Junior Medical Oficers, the Renal Supportive Care Clinical Nurse Specialist and medical students will be included in this role along with opportunities to initiate research and develop projects in the relevant clinical discipline.

Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital is an acute care facility which provides emergency care, medical, surgical and orthopaedic services to around 22,000 patients each year. The Hospital has an Intensive Care Unit, Children’s Ward and Obstetric Unit. A purpose-built regional Cancer Care Centre is now under construction.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) seeks an Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialty interest trauma.

 

The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) is responsible for funding, organising and delivering public health services in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions. The area administered by the ISLHD stretches along the coast, south of the Sydney metropolitan area, and spans the four Local Government Areas of Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama and Shoalhaven. The area’s population is just over 400 000 and is growing by 0.9% per year with the higher growth being experienced in Kiama and Shoalhaven.

The Wollongong Hospital is a major regional hospital located in the northern Illawarra approximately 60 minutes south of Sydney CBD. The Wollongong Hospital is a 500+ bed centre which provides both general and specialty medical and surgical services including adult intensive care and coronary care units.

The Illawarra has a varied ethnic makeup and reflects the NSW State average in its demographics and socio-economics.

Radiology services including X-rays, CT, MRI and ultrasound are available 24 hours. Reporting by Radiologists occurs in hours and after hours in a timely fashion. Angiography studies are available on request. A Cardiac Catheter lab is on site and managed by the hospital’s cardiologists. Pathology services available 24 hours and reported via computerised system and phone call. 24 hours pathology services are provided on site, including haematology, biochemistry, microbiology and serology.

A wide range of medical consultants are available including Cardiology, Respiratory, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Endocrine, Renal, Oncology, Haematology, Rheumatology and Geriatrics. Surgical Consultants available are General, ENT, Urology, Vascular, Orthopaedics, Maxillofacial, Obstetrics and Neuro-surgery.  Both Paediatric Physicians and Surgeons are on staff.

 

The doctor will take part in the surgical after hour’s overtime rosters including weekends.


The position will be primarily located at Wollongong and Shellharbour Hospitals but may be varied as agreed with the Executive Director Medical Services and as approved via Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee (MDAAC) to other facilities in ISLHD.

 

The applicant must be dedicated to a teamwork philosophy and be able to demonstrate their ability to work as a team member within the facility.

 

The position is Temporary for up to 12 months.

 

Salary and conditions are in accordance with VMO Sessional contract
