Purpose of Position

A vacancy exists in the above unit for a highly motivated Senior Scientist/Hospital scientist with appropriate knowledge and skills to join our friendly and supportive team. Our progressive and innovative team offers development opportunities for our staff and a caring environment for the delivery of high quality patient centred care. The successful applicant(s) will be expected to participate in analysis and reporting roles across the activities across the range of the Cancer Cytogenetics service, including karyotyping, FISH (direct and FFPE) and CGH/SNP microarray.

Duties include:
Analysis and reporting of G-banded karyotype analysis and interphase FISH (dierct and paraffin embedded) analysis from a variety of haematology/oncology referrals.
Analysis of CGH/SNP microarray profiles from Affymetrix 750K Cytoscan arrays for haematology/oncology referrals.
Reporting in accordance with NPAAC guidelines using ISCN (2016) and in the context of best practise guidelines for interpretation of cytogenetic and molecular cytogenetic results in malignancy.
Assisting in the training of staff.
Participation in laboratory quality system and management duties as directed by the Manager
Participatation in wet lab activities as required.

Selection Criteria Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy, Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries and St Vincent’s Health Australia

FHGSA and/or post-graduate qualification in Genetics (Senior Scientist) or MHGSA or equivalent qualification as assessed by Laboratory Manager (Hospital Scientist) with a minimum 5 years of experience in the field of Cancer Cytogenetics

Demonstrated experience in analysis and reporting of Cancer Cytogenetics (karyotype and FISH)


Demonstrated experience in analysis FFPE tissue FISH

Demonstrated experience in analysis of CGH/SNP microarray

Demonstrated experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems and Quality Management Systems

Knowledge of NATA and NPAAC guidelines as they relate to Cytogenetics
