Purpose of Position

Provide clinical management to patients presenting to the Emergency Department within the Paediatric Emergency Department. Provide clinical leadership, supervision and coordination of medical staff working in the ED in particular within the Paediatric Emergency Department. Ensuring efficient patient flow within the ED. Initiate and participate in clinical teaching and research as well as quality activities.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners eligible for registration in New South Wales for the above position within the Emergency Department at Royal North Shore Hospital, Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD).


Applicants should have recognition as a Paediatric Emergency Medicine Specialist by the Committee for Joint College Training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine. Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine or Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Paediatrics or equivalent is required as provided for in the Staff Specialist (State) Award.


Royal North Shore Hospital Emergency Department is a busy tertiary service seeing over 65,000 adult and 25,000 paediatric patients annually. As the major trauma centre and tertiary referral hospital for adults in northern Sydney the ED also sees significant numbers of trauma cases and critical illnesses in children. The successful applicant will be based in the Paediatric Emergency Department both clinically and providing leadership in further developing acute paediatric care In the ED, as well as taking part in our extensive teaching and research activities. The department has one of the largest Emergency Medicine training schemes in NSW. The PED at RNSH has separate 6 months accreditation for ACEM and RACP trainees.

Selection Criteria MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia

Recognised specialist qualification, Fellow of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine and / or Fellow of the RACP or equivalent as provided for in the NSW Staff Specialist (State) Award

Recognition as a Paediatric Emergency Medicine Specialist by the Committee for Joint College Training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (CJTC-PEM). Recognition as a PEM supervisor by CJTC - PEM is desirable

Appropriate experience with clinical, diagnostic and technical skills in paediatrics commensurate with practicing as a Senior Medical Practitioner in Emergency Medicine in a tertiary hospital environment seeing major trauma and sick children and neonates

Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Demonstrated ability to lead and work within a paediatric multidisciplinary team environment

Demonstrated commitment to teaching and research

Demonstrated interest in quality improvement methodologies including experience in clinical quality improvement projects
