Purpose of Position

The position is required to provide assessment, information and treatment for patients

in the Northern Sydney D&A Service, across a range of clinical settings. These include

Inpatient Withdrawal Management Services, the Involuntary Drug & Alcohol Treatment

Program (IDAT), Opioid Treatment Services and community based programs. The

successful applicant will be expected to work effectively within in multidisciplinary

teams and to provide effective leadership within those teams. Teaching and training

medical staff (including Psychiatry registrars and Addiction Medicine/Addiction

Psychiatry registrars) and other health professionals will be an important part of the

role. The role will also include opportunities for service development, quality

improvement projects and research as well as appropriate administrative responsibilities

Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners eligible for registration in New South Wales for the above position within the Drug and Alcohol, Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD). 


Applicants must have Fellowship of the Royal Australian New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) and/or Fellowship of the Chapter of Addiction Medicine FAChAM.


Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRAGCP) and experience working with patients with drug and alcohol problems in a general practice setting are desirable criterion.


Applicants expecting to be awarded their fellowship within 3 months will be considered.  If successful, the applicant will not be subsequently eligible to commence their appointment until after the relevant qualifications and requirements are formally completed.


Responsibilities will include: provision of assessment, information and treatment for patients in the Northern Sydney D&A Service, across a range of clinical settings. The successful applicant will have experience and training in Addiction Medicine and will be an accredited pharmacotherapy prescriber for opioid dependence.  Experience in research and a preparedness to participate in established research, teaching, and quality assurance projects is desirable.  The successful applicant will participate in the on-call roster and provide in-hour and out-of-hour services to the Northern Sydney Drug & Alcohol Service.


The successful applicant may be offered a Conjoint Academic appointment at the University of Sydney.  The level of academic appointment will be commensurate with qualifications, experience and scholarship and will be held only during the tenure of the Hospital appointment.  No remuneration is attached to the University appointment.  The appointee will be responsible to the University for academic matters and the hospital for clinical matters.

Selection Criteria MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia

FRANZCP (or equivalent) as specified in the Staff Specialists (State) Award and enrolled trainee with Australasian Chapter of Addiction Medicine or enrolled with RANZCP for Certificate of Advanced Training in Addiction Medicine. Applicants expecting to be awarded their Fellowship within three months may be considered

Working towards completion of the requirements for Certificate of Advanced Training in Addiction Psychiatry or Fellowship of the Australasian Chapter of Addiction Medicine

Clinical experience in the field of Addiction Medicine

Clinical experience in the management of opioid dependence

Registered pharmacotherapy prescriber (buprenorphine, methadone)

Demonstrated contemporary approach to alcohol and other drug treatments

Demonstrated skills in teaching, supervision, research and quality initiatives
