Purpose of Position

To undertake the following duties as directed by the Network Clinical Director Mental Health:

Clinical Duties:

1. Provide assessment and management of mental health patients at the community mental health locations of the district.

2. Provide:

Consultation service (telephone) for medical practitioners of the Mental Health Network hospitals, and local GP’s if so required and assessment of Network Base Hospital Emergency patients. Note that this varies from site to site.
3. Assess Adolescents and Older Persons as required with the support of Network Sub Specialist Psychiatrists.

4. Provide clinical leadership and supervision to the multidisciplinary teams of the Mental Health Service.

5. Participate in Privately Referred Non-Inpatient Initiative (PRNI) service provision (as required).


Applications are sought from suitably qualified psychiatrists to provide expert psychiatric care for the residents of the Clarence Valley.


Applications must be in the form of a curriculum vitae and a letter of no more than one page setting out the applicant's suitability for the role and preference for VMO or Staff Specialist appointment.


Provide specialist psychiatric services to patients in the Mental Health Network, to ensure optimal mental health care to patients of the Clarence region of the Northern NSW LHD.


Compliance with all current Ministry of Health policies, including NSW Health Code of Conduct.

Selection Criteria Registered or registrable with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency as a Psychiatrist.

Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and/or other specialist recognition as provided for under the Health Insurance Act 1973 and/or other specialist recognition as provided for in the Staff Specialist (State) Award.

Evidence of participation in CPD.

Experience in clinical governance/quality activities.

Approved as supervisor by RANZCP, or willingness to participate in training to be approved.

Sophisticated knowledge of the NSW Mental Health Act.

Ability to work in specialty areas of Older Persons Psychiatry and/or Consultation Liaison Psychiatry or willingness to develop skills towards same.

Assist in the provision of supervision to Resident Medical Officers, Registrars and Career Medical Officers of the Mental Health Network.
