Purpose of Position

The Aboriginal Health Worker (Traineeship) position has been established with a view to increasing and improving the retention of the Aboriginal Workforce in Western NSW LHD.  The trainee will work as part of the local community health team/hospital team to provide support, education and services to the local Aboriginal community, while gaining the skills and knowledge necessary to continue with a career in the primary health care setting.  A key focus of the position is to develop and implement initiatives in partnership with the community, agencies and stakeholders to reduce the burden of chronic diseases and lifestyle illness in the Aboriginal community; specifically ‘close the gap’ on Indigenous health disadvantage. The trainee will be required to attend formalised training and complete a Certificate IV in Aboriginal Health Work (Practice Stream)by attending 3 residential (block release) placements every semester to gain the nationally accredited qualification.



This is a Temporary Full Time position, classification is Dependant on Qualifications, located at Warren in the Western New South Wales Local Health District. Being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational qualification for this position as described under Section 14 (d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act, 1977 (NSW).


The position requires the successful applicant to commit to two years of Training through TAFE Western and learning on the job. 


AHW Trainees commence on Trainee wage then after successfully completing the first year prerequisites through TAFE Western and work place requirements, they will then move to the Aboriginal Health Education Award First Year wage.


After successful completion of the Traineeship, the Trainee will have completed Certificate IV in AHW (Practice Stream).

Selection Criteria 1) Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander decent (pursuant to Section 14 (d) of the Anti-discrimination act)

2) Secondary education to Year 10 / or equivalent life and/or professional experience

3) Ability to undertake relevant training in health education

4) Ability to communicate effectively

5) Basic Computer skills

6) Ability to work with Aboriginal Community Members

7) Ability to work as part of a team, follow instruction or lead where necessary

8) Current NSW driver’s licence or in process of obtaining and willing to travel (as necessary)
