Purpose of Position

The Nursing /Midwifery Unit Manager (NUM/MUM) role is pivotal to the co-ordination of patient care, ward management and leadership to ensure the delivery of high quality patient care and the efficient use of resources.

 

Clinician engagement and leadership has been a prominent feature of the public health system for a number of years, where clinician led clinical standards, safety and quality improvements have become a major focus. The LHD is committed to the strengthening and ongoing involvement and clinician engagement of staff that provide direct patient care in the planning, delivery, improvement and evaluation of health services.

 

Definition of NUM/MUM  roles for the Public Health System Nurses and Midwives (State) Award 2011:

"Nursing/Midwifery Unit Manager" means a registered nurse/midwife in charge of a ward or unit or group of wards or units in a public hospital or health service or public health organisation and shall include:

 

"Nursing/Midwifery Unit Manager Level 1"- responsibilities include:

(a) Coordination of Patient Services -

• liaison with all health care disciplines for the provision of services to meet

 patient needs;

• the orchestration of services to meet patient needs after discharge;

(b) Unit Management-

• implementation of hospital/health service policy:

• dissemination of information to all personnel;

• ensuring environmental safety;

• monitoring the use and maintenance of equipment;

• monitoring the supply and use of stock and supplies;

(c) Staff Management -

• direction, co-ordination and supervision of clinical care activities;

• training, appraisal and counselling of team members;

• rostering and/or allocation of team members;

• Development and/or implementation of new clinical practice according to patient need.

 

Nursing/Midwifery Unit Manager Level 2 - responsibilities in relation to patient services, ward or unit management and staff management are in excess of those of a Nursing/Midwifery Unit Manager Level 1.

 

Nursing/Midwifery Unit Manager Level 3 - responsibilities in relation to patient services, ward or unit management and staff management are in excess of those of a Nursing/Midwifery Unit Manager Level 2.

 

 Purpose in relation to this particular position:

Provision of direction, coordination and supervision of staff in the development and implementation of Community Mental Health Assessment and Acute Care Services This will include:   

  • Implementation of District Health Service policy
  • Dissemination of information to all personnel
  • Ensuring clinical and environmental safety to minimise risk/s
  • Monitoring equipment use and the supply and use of stock and supplies
  • Oversee recruiting and retention and ensuring that the Service  is equipped with suitably credentialed and qualified staff to deliver quality, evidence based care and treatment
  • Promote relationships with clients, families, carers, staff and service providers that are directed towards a consumer focussed environment
  • Liaison with relevant health care disciplines, agencies and departments for the provision of services to meet patient needs.

Selection Criteria 1. Current registration as a Registered Nurse/ Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and demonstrated skills and experience in leadership and management within a health care setting and/or tertiary qualifications in management

2. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead a clinical team within a multidisciplinary team environment.

3. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the National Mental Health Standards (2010), and the NSW Mental Health Act (2007) and Amendments

4. Highly developed and effective verbal and written communication skills including conflict resolution, mediation, delegation, and negotiation skills to enable effective communication and team work of health care providers in a multidisciplinary setting

5. Commitment to progressing quality in Northern NSW Local Health District and the principles of evidence based practice and clinical governance

6. Knowledge of contemporary issues in mental health service delivery including the role of key service partners

7. Understanding of and commitment to the effective and meaningful engagement of clinicians in the decision making process that impacts on positive patient outcomes

8. Demonstrated computer literacy and ability to use a variety of computer applications (eg word processing, excel, and databases). Current unencumbered Drivers Licence valid for use within NSW / Australia.
