Purpose of Position

Renal Supportive Care (RSC) involves an interdisciplinary approach that integrates the skills of renal medicine and palliative care to help patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) to live as well as possible by managing their symptoms and supporting them in living with advanced disease.  It is embedded in usual renal care. It also encompasses advance care planning and end-of-life care. The Staff Specialist Palliative Care for Renal Supportive Care will provide specialist outpatient and inpatient consulative support district wide in ISLHD as well as participate in the Palliative Care After Hours Roster.

 

This position will also have involvement in the clinical management of patients supported by  the after-hours palliative care nursing team, with responsibility for providing consultative services in acute hospitals, nursing homes and community settings as directed by the Head of Department and/or District Director of Aged, Rehabilitation and Palliative Care.

 

Consultation and patient management will include a primary care role for patients within the Palliative Care Unit at Wollongong Hospital.

 

Admitting, consultative, diagnostic, procedural, outpatient and on-call specialty services as determined and required by ISLHD.

 

Undergraduate and post-graduate teaching, research and supervision.

 

Participation in quality activities, professional development, continuing education and clinical research.

 

Palliative Care Staff Specialist 0.8 FTE

Position Summary:

An enthusiastic experienced Staff Specialist in Palliative Medicine is being recruited to implement and develop District-wide the Renal Supportive Care Service along with the Lead Nephrologist for the Renal Supportive Care Program. Training and supervision of Junior Medical Oficers, the Renal Supportive Care Clinical Nurse Specialist and medical students will be included in this role along with opportunities to initiate research and develop projects in the relevant clinical discipline.

Selection Criteria 1. Senior medical officer registered with the Australian Health
Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

2. FRACP or FAChPM or equivalent as provided for in the Staff
Specialists State Award.

3. Appropriate specific experience of Renal Supportive Care as well as general Palliative Care.

4. Demonstrated ability to provide high quality compassionate medical care as evidenced by recent practice experience in working congenially and collaboratively as both a leader and member of a multidisciplinary team and as a provider of services that engender high levels of patient satisfaction and experience.

5. Demonstrated ability to work with teams to support and optimize their capacity to deliver services.

6. Demonstrate a commitment to quality improvement and clinical risk management; actively seek out improvements to service delivery; initiating change and consulting those affected by the change; allocating resources and proactively managing potential conflicts.

7. Demonstrate both participation in ongoing professional development and a commitment to education and research.

8. Current unrestricted NSW Class C Driver Licence.
