Purpose of Position

The Staff Specialist will provide clinical management and treatment of patients under their care in the Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD), Wagga Wagga Health Service.

This care will be provided within the scope of practice granted by the MLHD Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee.

 

The Staff Specialist will participate in the consultant on call roster, assist with the education role of the department, provide clinical care to patients, undertake the management of the nominated service and comply with child protection and domestic violence policies and attend mandatory training.

 

As a member of the senior medical team, the incumbent will participate in and lead appropriate clinical governance activities and service planning and development as required within the medical services unit and across the whole nominated service. Wagga Wagga Rural Referral Hospital (WWRRH) is seeking Emergency Medicine Staff Specialists or Visiting Medical Officers to join the brand new Emergency Department.

 

About us
At Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) we provide a range of public health services to the Riverina and Murray regions of New South Wales across a geographic area of approximately 125,631 square kilometres.  With around 241,000 residents living within our District we employ approximately 3,500 staff who work in our 31 facilities and support services.  Our facilities include a Rural Referral Hospital, Base and District Hospitals, Multi-Purpose Services and Community Health Facilities.

 

Wagga Wagga Rural Referral Hospital is one of the busiest rural hospitals in NSW with 300 beds over 40,000 emergency presentations, 1,100 births and approximately 11,000 operations each year.  To date more than $14 million of medical equipment has been installed in the new facility.

About the role
Reporting to the Clinical Director, Emergency Medicine, you will provide clinical management & treatment of MLHD patients. You will be encouraged to develop an interest in simulation, ultrasound, trauma, toxicology education or short stay medicine as a senior member of the department. The emergency department at WWRRH sees approximately 40,000 patients each year; comprising a diverse clinical case mix, which includes 24% of presentations being paediatric in nature.

 

What are we looking for?

  • Unconditional General and/or Specialist Medical Registration with AHPRA.
  • ACEM Fellowship or equivalent (as assessed by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine).
  • Significant clinical experience in the provision of emergency medical care.
  • Leadership skills which prioritises quality, safety and risk, continuously supporting improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead service improvement through forms of quality improvement activities.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to liaise and negotiate with professional staff, the public and others.
  • Demonstrated interest, skills and participation in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  • The ability to positively represent the organisation, department goals and policies.

Selection Criteria Current unconditional General and/or Specialist Medical Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (APHRA). Or Advanced Trainee approaching Fellowship and Specialist Medical Registration.

Evidence of Fellowship of the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine and/or proof of recognition as a specialist, by the Specialists Recognition Advisory Committee. Or Advanced Trainee approaching final fellowship examination.

Evidence, after full registration, of no less than five years in the practice of medicine in New South Wales Health System or in any other institution deemed by the MLHD to be of equivalent standing inclusive no less than three years in supervised specialist training and/or experience.

Demonstrated significant experience in Emergency Medicine and evidence of competence in skills relevant to Australian rural hospital practice, including trauma and emergency scenarios.

Demonstrated commitment to continuing medical education relevant to Emergency Medicine and a willingness to commit to an equitable hospital on-call roster as per the Staff Specialist State Award.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health service colleagues as part of a multi disciplinary health care team and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues and staff and to work as an effective member of the clinical team.

Willingness to teach medical students and other staff of the hospital when reasonably requested with demonstrated understanding of and commitment to clinical quality improvement and peer review, Equal Employment Opportunity and Occupational Health Safety and Rehabilitation.
