Permanent up to 1.0FTE Dental Staff Specialist – Special Needs Dentistry

Applications are invited from suitably qualified Dental practitioners for the above position in the Western Sydney Local Health District.  The position will be primarily located at Westmead Centre for Oral Health, Westmead Hospital within the Department of Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Special Care Dentistry.


 


The Special Care Dentistry Unit provides specialist services to patients from the local Western Sydney Health District (estimated population of 900,000) and accepts referrals, in its role as provider of state-wide specialist special care dentistry services for the state of NSW (population: 7.5 million).


 


This position is suitable for highly experienced clinician well versed in all aspects of Special Needs Dentistry, including advocacy at the state, national and international level. Experience in working in a tertiary referral, multidisciplinary, hospital environment is essential. 


 


Successful applicants will provide specialist special dental needs services to eligible adults and children. This will involve the delivery of care by way of outpatient clinics and treatment of patients utilising general anaesthesia and sedation. The care of admitted patients is a requirement of the role. The role will include undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research and supervision, particularly of registrar and dental officer staff.


 


Successful applicants may be offered a conjoint university appointment within the Faculty of Dentistry at the relevant University of Sydney. The level of academic appointment will be commensurate with the qualifications, experience and scholarship and will be held only during the tenure of the Western Sydney Local Health District appointment. No remuneration is attached to the University appointment. The appointee will be responsible to the University for academic matters and to the District for clinical matters.


 


Appointees may be eligible for credentialing and privileging across all other facilities in the Western Sydney Local Health District.

Selection Criteria Possess or be eligible for registration with the Dental Board of Australia as a Specialist in Special Needs Dentistry or equivalent as provided for in the Health Employees Dental Officers (State) Award.

Must have or be eligible for Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency.

Sound clinical knowledge in Special Needs Dentistry demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position.

Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Dental Practitioner including: High level interpersonal and communication skills; Demonstrated ability working within a multidisciplinary team; Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and evidence-based best practice and; Demonstrated commitment to teaching and supervision.

Familiarity with research concepts and commitment to support basic, applied or clinical research within the Department.
