Purpose of Position

A vacancy exists in the above unit for a highly motivated Social Worker with appropriate knowledge and skills to join our friendly and supportive team. The successful applicant for the Social Worker Level 1 – Level 2 position will be expected to be responsible for the provision of a social work service to patients / clients and their families, liaison with other health care professionals within St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney and with external agencies in the areas of allocation. Clinically the areas of Immunology, Infectious Diseases and HIV as well as Renal Medicine for both inpatients and outpatients will be a primary allocation but with a need for flexibility to work according to clinical demand and priority. In this position based at St Vincent’s Hospital you will be part of the Social Work Department providing high level social work services within a multi-disciplinary service. The position will involve working closely with the St Vincent’s community, government and non-government organizations and service providers. You will be working full time providing consultation, advocacy, clinical assessments and counselling to patients, families and carers. The social worker will be contributing to complex discharge planning and providing clinical cover for colleagues as required. You will also be providing consultation to team members and education for patients and staff as required.  This position also involves capacity for initiating and participating in research and quality improvement as well as participation in the wider social work department activities. The successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in the program of Professional Development and Supervision as conducted by the Social Work Department SVHS. The successful applicant shall also be trained for and participate in the on call social work crisis roster for SVHS.

Selection Criteria Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy, Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries and St Vincent’s Health Australia.

Degree in Social Work and eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) with evidence of clinical experience in a hospital or health related field as a practising Social Worker.

Demonstrated clinical skills and knowledge in psychosocial assessment, counselling, therapy interventions, case management, advocacy and discharge planning.

Knowledge in one or more specialties of clinical immunology, infectious diseases, viral hepatitis and HIV infection, both within an inpatients and outpatients setting.

Demonstrated experience and ability to work as a member of multidisciplinary teams in a high pressure environment with competing demands with sound, negotiation and liaison skills.

Well-developed time management, prioritisation, computer, written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to contribute to research projects, quality improvement and education activities within the designated specialties and social work services.

Ability to participate in an extended hours on call service.
