Purpose of Position

The Continence Nurse provides a secondary level specialist service offering education, advice and support to nurses and other health professionals in the management of clients with a long-term (chronic) continence (urine and faecal) issues and their carers/significant others.

  • To work in partnership with the Clinical Nurse Consultant - Continence to develop the expertise of Western Sydney Local Health District community nurses in providing nursing care to clients requiring continence management.
  • The development and implementation of strategies to prevent people with long term (chronic) continence issues presenting to hospital
  • Supporting the implementation and evaluation of a clinical pathway for clients with a long term (chronic) continence issues
  • Offer expert advice and education to community nurses in the management of clients with a long term (chronic) continence illness including the identification, development and delivery of speciality related education programs
  • Provide specialist continence assessment for client’s with complex needs eg intermittent catheterisation, trial of voids, complex cancer related conditions, ENABLE assessments
  • Liaison with GPs, Specialist Medical Services, Acute Facilities, ENABLE and Non-government organisations eg Para Quad

The Continence Nurse will work within the Complex, Aged and Chronic Model of Care. Complex, Aged and Chronic Model of Care is a model of care based upon the philosophy of comprehensive multidisciplinary assessment and coordinated care to ensure that clients with chronic conditions or complex care needs are treated and maintained at optimal levels of function and independence in the community. Services are provided in a range of community settings, including clients’ homes and clinics in various locations.



Innovated position for a Clinical Nurse Specialsit Gde 2  to be part of the Blacktown Mt Druitt Chronic & Complex Community Nursing team. This Temporary full time position provides a secondary specialist level service to Community Nurses and other Health Professionals assisting them in the provision of care to clients who have continence management issues and their carers/significant others. Services to clients are provided in a range of community settings, including their own homes and clinics in various locations.

This position is temporary full time (Maternity relief up to 12 months), working 38 hours per week and is classified as a Clinical Nurse Specialist Grade 2.

Selection Criteria 1. Current Registered Nurse Division 1 National Registration (AHPRA) with a minimum of three (3) years full time equivalent post registration experience in Continence Management, and post graduate qualifications eg Graduate Certificate in Nursing (Continence Nurse Advisor), Stomal Therapy Nursing, Aged Care Nursing and/or Nursing Practice with an elective of Continence Management or working towards same.

2. Demonstrated evidence of currency of clinical practice and commitment to contemporary, evidence based Continence Management practice in client assessment and care planning using advanced nursing skills.

3. Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in the provision and development of clinical practice by utilisation of evidence based research with a demonstrated understanding of current Best Practise in Continence Management.

4. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, carers and a diverse range of health care providers including those in government, non government and community organisations.

5. Demonstrated ability to work within a multidisciplinary team, with an emphasis on service delivery, quality of care and team cohesion with an ability to identify and improve opportunities to enhance continuity of care between the acute sector, primary care providers and community based services.

6. Demonstrated ability to provide clinical education for staff and clients/carers.

7. Demonstrate ability to utilise information technology within a variety of applications and willingness to undertake training.

8. Current Drivers Licence valid within Australia and willingness to use for work purposes.
