Purpose of Position

Provide a comprehensive Child Life Therapy service to patients of the John Hunter Children’s Hospital, including individualised assessment and interventions for these children and families.


Participate as a member of the multidisciplinary team, and act as a resource in the area of clinical expertise.


Provide timely and effective services within an evidence-based framework and facilitate quality improvement in the area of clinical expertise for clients.


Opportunity exists for a Permanent Part time (8 hpw) Child Life Therapy position at the John Hunter Children's Hospital. This position will support children and young people undergoing medical treatment and rehabilitation during inpatient admissions. There may be potential for the successful applicant to work up to 16 hours per week for a period of time.

Selection Criteria Must hold a bachelor of early childhood, primary teaching or a related field that includes two years study in child development, or other qualification deemed equivalent by the employer

Sound understanding and knowledge of the developmental needs of children and young people (0-18), and how stress and trauma may impact this population

Sound understanding of the acute paediatric health setting including the needs of children and young people undergoing medical procedures

Demonstrated high level interpersonal communication, and conflict resolution skills

Demonstrated ability to problem-solve, and set priorities in both self-directed and team environments

Proven commitment to quality improvement, research, and professional development of self and others

Demonstrated application of professional and ethical boundaries when working with complex situations, and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
