Purpose of Position
  • Contribute to a skilled and sustainable Aboriginal population health workforce in
  • Support the capacity of Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District to mount effective
    preventive health strategies to address chronic diseases within the Aboriginal population in NSW.
  • Develop the surge capacity of Aboriginal public health practitioners within the LHD who are able to support a culturally appropriate response to a variety of public health risks.
  • Prepare Aboriginal people for middle management roles across a range of population health settings.
  • Contribute to the development of a broad range of career pathways within population health practice for Aboriginal people with undergraduate qualifications.
  • Contribute to learning communities that support and maintain a skilled Aboriginal population health workforce in NSW.
  • Contribute to NSW Health's commitment to Closing the Gap in Indigenous Health and in particular to the six key strategic directions described in the NSW Aboriginal Health Plan 2013-2023.

  • The Aboriginal Population Health Traineeship Initiative (APHTI) is an exciting opportunity which offers a combination of various work placements with a competitive salary as Health Manager Level 1, plus part-time study towards a fully funded Master of Public Health (MPH) degree.
  • Trainees undertake 4-5 days a week of workplace-based learning in Public and Population Health, and are supported with 1 day a week if required of study leave during the semester.
  • The position works within a competency framework as well as having support through senior managers, mentors and other Aboriginal trainees across the state. Additional training opportunities are also available throughout the traineeship to further develop skills in Population Health and in the NSW public healthcare system.

Selection Criteria Must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent. An applicant's race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised by Section 14 (d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW.

Demonstrated understanding of the Australian health system

Sound knowledge of social, cultural, political and health issues affecting Aboriginal people, families and communities and demonstrated understanding of the social determinants of Aboriginal Health.

Demonstrated high level oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.

Minimum of three years experience in health related full-time equivalent employment, working in a multi-disiplinary team.

Demonstrated self direction and capable of setting priorities accurately. Ability to meet competing deadlines within work and between work and study

Demonstrated experience in the use of Microsoft office applications, including Excel.

Successful completion of a recognised undergraduate degree and/or ability to meet the admission requirements for the post grad degree of MPH at a university in NSW.
