Purpose of Position

·         This position requires participation in a 7-day, 24-hour rotating roster including weekends and public holidays.

·         Sort, scan, record, process and prepare specimens for testing and distribute to other departments as required.

·         Receive and assign appropriate tests for serology and virology using the laboratory information system.

·         Assist in quality control practices of the laboratory such as temperature monitoring and the calibration, maintenance and trouble-shooting of equipment as required.

·         Assist in general house-keeping and day-to-day management, stock management and administrative duties as directed.

·         Organise samples to be distributed to external laboratories.

·         Assist other staff with Public Health Unit and Infection Control Unit notifications, investigations of disease outbreaks and nosocomial infections.

·         Assist in the maintenance of the chemical and hazardous substance registers and MSDS lists for SAViD.

·         Assist other staff to ensure that the Division’s methods and procedures are relevant and up to date.

·         Assist in the management of the storage of specimens, test material and associated documents for the required period as determined by NPAAC guidelines.

·         Participation and involvement with the relevant Work Health and Safety and Quality Management programs in SAViD.

·         Communicate clearly verbally and in writing; respond to telephone enquiries, give results, and assess when enquiries should be referred to more senior scientific or medical staff.

·         Duties as directed by the Senior Hospital Scientists, Laboratory Manager and Director.


We are looking for a motivated Technical Assistant to work within the Serology and Virology Diagnostic (SAViD) Division of the NSW Health Pathology Randwick Microbiology Department at the Prince of Wales Hospital at Randwick.


This is a permanent full-time position and the Technical Assistant will work closely with other scientists and technicians to provide an optimal and efficient diagnostic serology and virology service. This is a shift position with participation in a 7-day, 24-hour rotating roster including weekends and public holidays.


This is a Category A position. All Category A applicants must read and understand Policy Directive PD2011_005 Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Diseases. All new recruits must agree to comply with the requirements outlined in this policy. New recruits must provide evidence against specified diseases and comply with the requirements of this policy at their own cost prior to appointment.

This position is a permanent position. To be eligible for permanent appointment to a position in NSW Health, you must have an Australian citizenship or permanent Australian residency. Employment of a temporary visa holder will only occur if there is no suitable local applicant.

Selection Criteria Recent experience working in a clinical laboratory performing specimen processing and preparation with a high attention to accuracy and detail.

Knowledge of Microbiology and medical terminology.

Computer literacy and data entry experience.

High level of interpersonal, communication and organisational skills with the ability to prioritise work.

Proven ability to work effectively both unsupervised and as part of a team.

Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills combined with the ability to
investigate and resolve general issues within the laboratory.

Ability to be a shift worker and participate in a 7-day, 24-hour rotating roster including weekends and public holidays.
