Employment Status Permanent Full Time
Entity Murrumbidgee Local Health District
Geographical Location Wagga Wagga
Advertised Award/Classification Staff Specialist
Number of FTE 1.00
Purpose of Position

The appointee will join an enthusiastic team of people, including two existing Geriatricians, in providing a range of Aged Care services to older people in the Murrumbidgee Local Health District.  This will involve working in hospital and community settings.

An exciting opportunity exists to join a dynamic team who are currently delivering and planning the further development of Aged Care Services to people in the Riverina region of New South Wales.  The Murrumbidgee LHD is a large geographical area (over 125,000 sq.km.) in the southern part of New South Wales.  It serves a population of some 250,000 people, almost half of whom live in the main centres of Wagga Wagga, Griffith, Leeton and Young.  The region is irrigated by the Murrumbidgee and Murray River systems and agriculture is its mainstay.

The principal hospital in the region is the newly-built Wagga Wagga Rural Referral Hospital (WWRRH), a high-level 300-bed University Teaching Hospital.  This provides specialist care in all of the major clinical specialties.  It is home to rural clinical schools of the University of New South Wales and Notre Dame University and is also affiliated with Charles Sturt University.

The person appointed to this post will become one of three Staff Specialist Geriatricians in the Murrumbidgee LHD region.  The number of Staff Specialist Geriatricians will further increase as the service builds capacity.  A three-year strategic plan for Aged Care is focussing on:

  • Better integration of Aged Care Services across the region.
  • Expansion of Aged Care Services to the more rural and remote parts of the region.
  • The development of more comprehensive dementia-related services.
  • The development of Transition Aged Care across the region.
  • The promotion of fitness and activity among elderly people in the region.
  • The enhancement of education and training opportunities for our staff.

While the position will be based in Wagga Wagga, you will be expected to contribute towards a region-wide service.  You will be encouraged to participate in the Acute General Medicine on-call roster at WWRRH to which 16 physicians currently contribute.

Both WWRRH and Calvary Riverina work together to facilitate safe quality patient care. Calvary Riverina is a 168 bed hospital providing a diverse range of services including intensive care/critical care, medical, surgical, rehabilitation, obstetric, drug and alcohol and palliative care to a regional catchment population >300,000. Opportunities to work at Calvary would be available to the successful applicant.

This post is advertised as a full-time position though a part-time appointment will be considered.
