Staff Specialist in Geriatric Medicine – Specialist Mental Health Service for Older Persons

Hunter New England Mental Health is looking for a Staff Specialist in Geriatric Medicine to ensure the provision of consultant Geriatric Medicine Services to the Mater Mental Health Service (predominantly the Mental Health Unit for Older Persons – MHUOP) as well as Ibis Lodge, Morisset.

The consultant Geriatrician will provide consultations at the Mater Mental Health Centre and Ibis lodge for inpatients aged 65 or over or those with age related psychiatric illness adapting to a consultation model of care. The Psychiatrist will be expected to demonstrate the clinical skills and knowledge appropriate to the clinical caseload, keep abreast of the developing knowledge in Geriatric Medicine, maintain relationships with Geriatricians and other services across the large health district and maintain regular attendance at Geriatric and General Medicine departmental meetings.

Selection Criteria Primary medical degree registrable with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) with specialisation in geriatric medicine or other specialist recognition as provided for in the Staff Specialist (State) Award or Health Insurance Act (1973)

Demonstrated experience as a 'MEDICAL EXPERT' in General Medicine and Geriatric Medicine.

Demonstrated history of being an effective 'COMMUNICATOR' (written and verbal). Able to provide empathetic and expert clinical care to patients, care givers, medical and non-medical colleagues.

Demonstrated history of being a 'COLLABORATOR'. Able to work cooperatively with multidisciplinary teams and have effective liaison with other service providers in the area.

Demonstrated experience as a 'LEADER'. Able to effectively motivate and develop staff within a multidisciplinary environment.

Demonstrated history of being a 'SCHOLAR'. Commitment continued professional development along with skills and enthusiasm to provide undergraduate and postgraduate Medical Officers, Nursing and Allied Health staff training.
