Purpose of Position

Provision of a safe, efficient and effective Intensive Care service at a Consultant level to Tamworth Hospital and Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD).


To provide Intensive Care services to patients within the Intensive Care Unit including High Dependency Unit, and hospital wards, including a Rapid Response Team service and a Trauma Response service.


To complement the clinical, teaching, training and research activities of the HNE Intensive Care network.


The Intensive Care service is based at Tamworth. From time to time and by mutual agreement, members of the Critical Care Consultant team may also have an opportunity to provide clinical service to Armidale Hospital.

Tamworth Hospital completed a $220 million redevelopment in July 2015 which delivered a brand new Intensive Care Unit, increasing from 11 to 16 ICU/HDU beds. With 288 beds you will be joining one of the largest Rural Referral Hospitals in Australia.

The Intensive Care Unit receives a mix of patients admitted to the unit which includes trauma victims, envenomation, post-operative management of complex surgical patients, respiratory support, sepsis, AKI, and paediatrics (short term ventilation).  We are seeking the right applicant to fit our service. You will be a natural clinical leader, teacher and skilled communicator, engaged in building capacity of our service by developing effective relationships, and valuing the contribution of all the team. This position is suitable for both Intensivist’s and Emergency Physicians with experience in Critical Care.

Selection Criteria Medical degree registrable with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand (FICM/FJFICM) or Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM) or other specialist recognition as provided under the Staff Specialist (State) Award

Demonstrated current clinical practice of a high standard and ability to adapt clinical practice in accordance with contemporary evidence based best practice.

Commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision of trainee specialists, interns, resident medical officers, medical students, postgraduate and undergraduate nurses and allied health staff.

Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a multidisiplinary team with demonstrated high level verbal and written communication skills.

Demonstrated commitment to maintaining personal knowledge and skills by participating in continuing education and professional standards programs, and/or participation in critical care research.

Demonstrated commitment in all areas of quality improvement, best practice medicine, and use of information technology related to intensive care.

Preparedness and ability to participate on after-hours overtime and on-call rosters.

Preparedness and ability to work in other hospitals within HNELHD and current unencumbered drivers licence.
