Purpose of Position

This position will cover within Division of Aged Care in Illawarra hospitals of ISLHD providing specialist geriatric services in Wollongong and surrounding hospitals, for inpatients, outpatients and on a community basis. This will involve acute geriatric receiving and inpatient care, contribution to the Wollongong 7 day on call roster, a consultation service for acutely unwell elderly patients with other medical, orthopaedic and surgical problems, and ongoing sub-acute care of these patient groups. Currently we have an acute unit in Wollongong Hospital and Shellharbour Hospital and sub-acute services in Bulli, Coledale and Kiama hospitals. This position will contribute to community duties including admission and ED avoidance strategies using ehealth and urgent clinic appointments.

 

 

This is a temporary full time 40hpw maternity relief position until 2 August 2019 with the possibility of an extension at same/reduced hours.

 

The Division of Aged Care across the Illawarra includes Specialist Medical Staff, Aged Care Clinical Nurse Consultants, Aged Care Emergency teams, and Commonwealth funded positions to support Aged Care assessments in the community. The Illawarra Acute Geriatric Service was established in 2005 and has developed significantly over time. Currently the service has been developed in the Illawarra area from Coledale in the north to Gerringong in the South. 

 

Wollongong Hospital is the main teaching and tertiary referral centre for the district and this is where the Acute Geriatric Service and admission beds are based. The service provides inpatient services at Coledale Hospital 18 awaiting placement beds, Bulli Hospital 52 Aged Care Beds, Shellharbour Hospital 16 beds, Wollongong Hospital 14 Aged Care beds plus 3 Rapid Assessment beds and approximately 30 consults per week to other medical and surgical patients and Kiama Hospital 20 Aged Care Beds. In addition to the inpatient services, outpatient services are currently provided at Bulli Hospital, Wollongong Hospital, Shellharbour Hospital, and Kiama Hospital. There are routine outpatient appointments plus urgent ED avoidance appointments daily and an outreach service to Residential Aged Care Facilities (RACFs). The division is currently involved in a number of ACI supported projects and has appointed a Head of Department for Orthogeriatric Medicine.  The Aged Care Service is accredited for Advanced Trainees in Geriatric Medicine and has an active and supported research role. The Division of Aged Care service is led by the Clinical Director, Dr Jan Potter, who is also a Clinical Professor at the Graduate School of Medicine, UOW.

Selection Criteria 1. Specialist registration or eligible for specialist registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Agency (AHPRA).

2. Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) with an interest in Geriatric Medicine as provided for in the Staff Specialist (State) Award.

3. Demonstrated commitment to teaching with experience in teaching both undergraduate and post graduate students and other staff of the hospital.

4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and staff and to work as an effective member of the clinical team across multiple sites.

5. Proficiency in appropriate computer usage.

6. Demonstrated experience in and commitment to research relevant to the role and needs of the Department.

7. Current drivers licence with a willingness to travel in accordance with the demands of the position.
