Purpose of Position

To be part of the geriatric services team in the Shoalhaven Region. This involves inpatient, outpatient and consultation services across the whole Shoalhaven Hospital Group. The provision of these services includes provision of specialist geriatric advice on the management of patients and facilitation of patient to appropriate geriatric services throughout the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District. There is an expectation that this position will be involved in quality improvement projects and supervision of junior medical officers and medical students. There are 2 x 0.6FTE permanent positions available with the addition of temporary hours up to 0.9FTE to end of June 2019 with possibility of extension.

 

We are looking for 2 Staff Specialist Geriatricians to join our Aged Care team in the provision of specialist aged care in the Shoalhaven Region. This will involve working with other specialists within the Division of Aged Care, Rehabilitation and Palliative Care in the Shoalhaven to provide consultant level care for inpatients at Shoalhaven Hospital with support of a dedicated junior staff team, as well as providing consultation services to Milton and David Berry Hospitals, outpatient and community consultations.

 

These positions will be

1.         0.6 FTE permanent + 0.3 temporary to 30 June 2019 with the possibility of extension of temporary hours

2.         0.6 FTE permanent + 0.2 temporary to 30 June 2019 with the possibility of extension of temporary hours

 

Shoalhaven Hospital is a busy acute care facility which provides emergency care, medical, surgical and orthopaedic services to around 22,000 patients each year. The hospital has an Intensive Care Unit that incorporates High Dependency and Coronary Care beds and also provides Emergency Department services. Shoalhaven Hospital boasts a newly renovated 11 bed Acute Geriatric Ward, with a highly supportive and functioning team. David Berry Hospital provides rehabilitation and slow stream medical care. It also provides specialist palliative care for the Shoalhaven Region. The hospital has 26 beds – 17 in the Rehabilitation Unit and 9 beds in Palliative Care.

Applicants should have Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) with Specialist qualifications and/or experience and interest in Geriatric Medicine (or equivalent). Applications will also be accepted by registrars in their final year of geriatric training who will have completed all FRACP geriatric medicine requirements by May 2019.

Selection Criteria 1. Registration or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Medical Practitioner.

2. Specialist qualifications in Geriatric Medicine (FRACP and/or specialist recognition as provided for in the Staff Specialist (State) Award) or registrars in their final year of geriatric training who will have completed all FRACP geriatric medicine requirements by May 2019.

3. Proven capacity and/or experience in the provision of effective high quality geriatric services, demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of participation in quality improvement activities relevant to the speciality.

4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and staff and to work as an effective member of the clinical team across multiple sites.

5. Demonstrated commitment to teaching with experience in teaching and supervision of both undergraduate and post graduate students and other staff of the hospital.

6. Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice requirements of the position.

7. Proficiency in appropriate computer usage.

8. Current drivers licence with a willingness to travel in accordance with the demands of the position.
