Purpose of Position

Hunter Genetics provides clinical genetic services to the Hunter New England region, with outreach services provided to the western and northern parts of the State of NSW, Australia. Services are provided via multidisciplinary teams (20 staff approx.) including clinical geneticists, genetic counsellors and administrative staff. The services includes: The GOLD (Genetics of Learning Disability) Service, a state wide service and the General Genetics Service.

The position involves working in the General Genetics Service. The position provides a clinical genetics consultant service to outpatients in the areas served by Hunter Genetics, inpatient consultations at John Hunter Hospital, John Hunter Children’s Hospital and other local hospitals. Outreach genetics consultation services are provided in Hunter New England region and Northern NSW also by Staff Specialists.

 

Staff Specialist in Clinical Genetics

Applicants must hold a Medical degree registrable in NSW AND qualifications in Clinical Genetics equivalent to Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP or other specialist recognition as provided for in the Staff Specialist State Award or Health Insurance Act of 1973) with satisfactory completion of advanced training in clinical genetics.

Selection Criteria Medical degree registrable in NSW AND qualifications in Clinical Genetics equivalent to Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP or other specialist recognition as provided for in the Staff Specialist State Award or Health Insurance Act of 1973) with satisfactory completion of advanced training in clinical genetics.

Experience in the field of general clinical genetics.

Excellent communication and people skills and demonstrated planning, organisational and problem solving abilities.

Demonstrated ability to co-ordinate work, manage time, delegate and monitor progress in a multidisciplinary team environment.

Effective computing skills (post basic knowledge of email and Microsoft Office).

Ability to engage in, and publish / present, research of a clinical and / or collaborative nature. Ability to engage in teaching / educational activities.

Experience in the use of databases for management of statistics, research of literature and diagnosis of patients.

NSW driver’s licence (or equivalent). Willingness to travel to other centres and to stay overnight for clinics or meetings.
