Purpose of Position

As part of the NSW Service Plan for People with Eating Disorders funding has been secured by Sydney Children’s Hospital Network (SCHN), in partnership with The Butterfly Foundation to establish a Child and Adolescent, Eating Disorder Day Program.


This is an innovative and exciting initiative, as no such program for children or adolescents currently exists in NSW. The program focuses on recovering normal weight, improving eating behaviors, enhancing the family and young person’s capacity to manage the eating disorder and reducing the psychosocial consequences of the illness. The program includes a significant education component, group work and the inclusion and integration of family participation. In addition to standard day program care a special program is available for rural and remote families comprising of a 5-day on-site intensive intervention with follow up through Child and Adolescent Psychiatry TeleOutreach Services in partnership with local Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services.

The Day Program is part of the larger SCHN Eating Disorder Service which has services at The Children’s Hospital, Westmead and Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick.

 

The staff specialist will provide expert paediatric consultation and medical mangement of the patients in the Day Program as well as consultation to rural patients seeking assessent.

 

The position of Eating Disorder Day Program Paediatirician will ensure that;

  • Clinical Services are focused on delivering excellent clinical care to children admitted to the Eating Disorder Day Program and supporting their families.
  • Research and teaching is undertaken and focused on the area of Eating Disorders.

In addition to the standard day program care a special program for rural and remote families comprises of intensive therapeutic intervention with follow up through Child and Adolescent Psychiatry TeleOutreach Services in partnership with local Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services.

 

The Day Program is part of the larger SCHN Eating Disorder Service which has services at The Children’s Hospital, Westmead. The Day Program operates out of Butterfly House at Crow’s Nest.

This position is Permanent Part Time working 12 hours per week and is classified as a Staff Specialist.

Selection Criteria 1. Eligible for registration in NSW

2. Fellowship of the RACP (Paediatrics) and/or other specialist recognition as provided for in the Salaried Senior Medical Practitioners Award.

3. Experience in working with Adolescent Eating Disorder patients or Adolescent Patients with complex medical and psychological needs

4. Experience working in a multi-disciplinary Team

5. Experience in a child and adolescent health setting

6. Experience with a wide range of treatment methods including awareness of the use of psychotropic drugs

7. Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills

8. Adaptability to the needs of the child, their family, and the changing requirements of the position
