Purpose of Position

The Senior IR/ER Specialist is responsible for providing industrial relations expertise, strategic advice and operational support on a wide range of employment and industrial issues, including employment legislation, Award interpretation, policy development and interpretation, employee relations issues and disputes.

The Senior IR Specialist will facilitate a cooperative industrial relations environment within the LHD through building and developing relationships with stakeholders and a hands-on approach to constructive resolution of issues.

This specialist role supports the District through negotiations with industrial associations on workplace issues, presenting matters on behalf of WSLHD at various Tribunals, Courts and Industrial Commission, and developing industrial relations policy, procedures and resource materials to build capability and understanding.

This position is permanent full time, working 38 hours per week and is classified as a Health Manager Level 4.      


Please note: To be eligible for permanent appointment to a position in NSW Health, you must have an Australian citizenship or permanent Australian residency.

Selection Criteria 1. Qualification in Industrial Relations, Employment Law, Human Resources Management or equivalent, or extensive practical experience in handling industrial /employment matters.

2. Experience in providing high quality strategic employment relations advice together with demonstrated ability to manage industrial matters including negotiations with industrial associations, advocacy experience, Award and legislation interpretation and application.

3. Strong knowledge of the NSW Industrial Relations system, and demonstrated experience in presenting matters before the NSW Industrial Relations Commission and Statutory bodies including preparing and presenting matters before tribunals and industrial associations.

4. Demonstrated experience in managing and reviewing workplace disputes, grievances and investigations.

5. Proven experience in leading employment and/or industrial negotiations as well as providing sound advice and decision making on related matters.

6. Demonstrated high level analytical skills, excellent verbal and written skills including the ability to advocate on complex issues and strong presentation skills.

7. Proven success in constructive stakeholder engagement and relationship building including the ability to influence and negotiate.

8. Unrestricted NSW drivers license.
