Purpose of Position


The Whole Family Team provides coordinated specialist clinical services to families where child protection concerns exist in the context of drug and alcohol health problems, and parenting difficulties. The team follows an assertive outreach model of care and works intensively with families for up to six months.


The philosophy of the Whole Family Team is that the family is the constant in a child or young person’s life. Accordingly, family centred care, in which partnerships are built between families and health professionals, is a core concern. These partnerships are built on trust, respect and valuing the role of the family in the wellbeing of the child or young person. Emotional, social and developmental support are integral components of care.


The Whole Family Team comprises clinicians from a range of disciplines who possess a broad scope of specialist clinical skills. Team members are encouraged and supported to fully utilise their particular training and expertise to meet the needs of families.


The primary role of the Keep Them Safe Whole Family Team - Drug and Alcohol Senior Clinician is to provide substance use specific assessments, clinical treatments, referral and education to family members in accordance with relevant guidelines and literature including the NSW Drug and Alcohol Psychosocial Interventions Professional Practice Guidelines and relevant practices of the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Drug and Alcohol Service. The position also involves intensive case management, family interventions, parenting interventions and skills programs as well as group program (therapeutic & diversional).


The position holder will possesses extensive specialist knowledge regarding substance use specific assessments, clinical treatments, referral and psycho-educational interventions as they relate to families of the Whole Family Team.


In addition the position holder will provide expert consultation to the team, including participation in clinical reviews, as well as build knowledge and capacity within the team on substance-related assessment and treatment. The position holder will provide direct services to clients of the Whole Family Team requiring advanced practice skills.

Selection Criteria 1) Tertiary qualifications, professional registration and significant clinical experience as follows:
i) Occupational Therapy - Bachelor Degree and general registration with AHPRA; 3yrs clinical experience in a D&A treatment setting with experience working with families
ii) Counselling and Social Work - Bachelor Degree and eligibility for membership of AASW; 3 yrs clinical experience in a D&A treatment setting with experience working with families
iii) Snr Psychologist - a 4 year degree in psychology, being a 3 yr degree with a 4th year honours; or has qualifications deemed equivalent by the employer, and has full registration with the Psychology Board of Australia and 9 yrs experience including experience in a D&A treatment setting and working with families
iv)Clinical Nurse Specialist – Current registration with APHRA – Div 1 Registered Nurse; Post registration qualification in Drug and Alcohol with at least 3 yrs full time equivalent experience working within the D&A speciality

2) Demonstrated advanced reasoning skills with proven ability to work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team with minimal direct clinical supervision. In addition, demonstrated capacity to act as an independent consultant in the specialty area of addiction.

3) Demonstrated competence in family focused, evidence based clinical assessment and intervention with a complex caseload in a community setting. This includes specialist knowledge of comorbid mental health and drug and alcohol problems, intra-familial child abuse and neglect, and contemporary family focused integrated treatment including risk assessment and safety planning.

4) Demonstrated partnership building and negotiation skills with a wide range of service providers and well developed understanding of the interface between services.

5) Experience in, or commitment to, working with individuals and families from Indigenous backgrounds and/or diverse cultural backgrounds.

6) Demonstrated advanced skills and significant experience in providing clinical supervision.

7) Evidence of an advanced level of verbal/written communication skills, analytical and interpersonal skills and the ability to apply these skills to contribute to the Whole Family Team ongoing evaluation, monitoring and enhancement of service delivery including report writing.

8) Current NSW Driver Licence (including P1 or above) and willingness to use same for work purposes.
