Purpose of Position

The position of Career Medical Officer in the Public Health Unit is an operational role to provide public health medical expertise, clinical advice and support to the Infectious Diseases, Immunisation, and Environmental Health Unit’s operational teams .  The position supports the health protection roles and regulatory functions undertaken by the Director and will be required to act at times as Director of the Unit. 

 

The Public Health Unit is responsible for the surveillance and control of communicable disease, coordination of immunisation, environmental health, epidemiology and public health research in Northern Sydney. These services are provided by three teams of professionals.

 

The Public Health Medical Officer will provide medical expertise and support to all of the unit's team. The position supports the health protection roles and regulatory functions undertaken by the Director. The successful applicant will also be required to participate in the after hours on-call coverage for the unit and to act as the Director of the unit during his absence. 

 

This position is Permanent Full-Time and is classified as a Career Medical Officer Grade 2. Note that employment of a temporary visa holder may only occur if the position cannot be filled on a permanent basis.

Selection Criteria Medical practitioner who is registered or registrable to practise in New South Wales with five years postgraduate experience or more. Unrestricted NSW driver’s license.

Post graduate qualifications and/or years of experience or similar, in public health, health protection, epidemiology or a related field.

Demonstrated knowledge of communicable disease control, immunisation, public health policy and practise, and environmental health.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of reports, research, briefs, correspondence and comments concerning matters of significance to the Public Health Unit.

Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a multidisciplinary team.

Experience in analysing, interpreting and presenting health information, including use of databases and statistical software.

Demonstrated organisational skills and ability to work to timeframes and meet deadlines.
