Purpose of Position

The Specialist Director Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine will lead, develop and maintain a comprehensive Service for the Hospitals of the Richmond Network ensuring the safe, effective and efficient delivery of services.

Based primarily at Lismore Base Hospital, the Anaesthetic department provides a service to the Surgical Services Network which includes Lismore, Ballina, Casino, Byron Bay Hospitals.

Lismore Base Hospital is the major referral Hospital for the far north coast of NSW and services a catchment population in excess of 160,000.  The Hospital has most major specialties and  sub-specialties represented including General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Vascular, Urology, Ophthalmology, ENT, Oral Maxillofacial, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, with accredited Registars and Resident Medical Officers.  Anaesthetists together with the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit provide Medical Retrieval Services within this Area Health Service.  The teaching of Registars, Resident Medical Officers and Medical Students is a function of all Senior Medical Officer positions.  The Hospital is undergoing a major redevelopment which will include a new Operating Theatre Suite of 9 theatres.

Northern NSW Local Health District (NNSWLHD) seeks an experienced Specialist Director Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine to work with its multi-disciplinary team of staff, providing expert medical assessment and management of patients within the department. The Anaesthetic Department is well-regarded with a new Theatre Suite of 9 theatres opening in early 2018 as part of the major multi million dollar redevelopment of the Hospital.

The position will be primarily located at Lismore Base Hospital but also provides services to Ballina and Casino Hospitals as part of the Richmond Network Surgical Services.  The Hospital has most major specialties and sub-specialties represented including Ophthalmology, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Gynaecology, ENT, Urology and Vascular Surgery with accredited Registrars and Resident Medical Officers.  Anaesthetists together with the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit provide Medical Retrieval Services within this Health District.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners eligible for Specialist Registration in New South Wales for the above position with the service at Lismore Base Hospital in NNSWLHD.

Applicants should have Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists

and/ or other specialist recognition as provided for in the NSW Staff Specialist (State Award).

The Director will lead, develop and maintain a comprehensive service for the Hospitals of the Richmond Network ensuring the safe, effective and efficient delivery of services.

The position requires an excellent working knowledge and experience in current Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine as well as contemporary Management of a busy evolving serivce. The duties involve the provision of both a Consultation and Admission service for patients admitted to Lismore Base Hospital and will also provide an opportunity for teaching and research.  The Director will have a 50% clinical role to maintain clinical skills and 50% administrative role.

Lismore Base Hospital is a regional teaching hospital with a growing junior medical officer training program and strong links to Royal North Shore, Prince of Wales and John Hunter Hospitals.  The Hospital and the University Centre for Rural Health have a good student program providing for Medical Students from University of Sydney, University of Wollongong, University of NSW and University of Western Sydney.

The successful candidate must be dedicated to a teamwork philosophy and be able to demonstrate their ability to work as a team member within the facility.

Salary and conditions are in accordance with the NSW Staff Specialist (State Award).

Selection Criteria Eligible for full Specialist registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. Must be registered prior to commencement of the position.

Fellowship Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists or other specialist recognition as provided for in the Staff Specialist (State) Award or under the Health Insurance Act 1973.

Demonstrated current clinical experience in Anaesthetics with current clinical leadership and management experience.

Demonstrated commitment to quality assurance, continuous quality improvement and continuing medical education.

Demonstrated high level communication and interpersonal skills.

Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of OH&S legislation as it applies to the management of a clinical team.

Current drivers licence and the ability to participate in an on call roster including after hours and weekend support.
