Purpose of Position

To support the development of Haematology Services to patients of the Richmond Network (primarily Lismore Base Hospital) in support of the Clinical Services Plan for the Clinical Network. 

To support and facilitate a culture of learning and best practice consistent with the teaching role of the Lismore Base Hospital.

To provide diagnostic Haematology services for inpatients and outpatients of the Richmond Network and outpatient clinics at Grafton Base Hospital as required.

To assist in the provision of laboratory Haematology Services at the Lismore Base Hospital and Pathology North.

To participate in departmental teaching, research and quality improvement activities.

Northern NSW Local Health District (NNSWLHD) seeks an experienced Haematologist to work with its multi-disciplinary team of staff, providing expert medical assessment and management of patients within the department. The Oncology unit is well-regarded and provides in excess of 5000 occasions of service in a six month period to Haematology patients.

The position will be primarily located at Lismore Base Hospital, but may be varied as agreed with the Director of Medical Services, and as approved by the Medical and Dental Appointment Advisory Committee (MDAAC), to other facilities in the Northern NSW Local Health District (NNSWLHD).

Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners eligible for registration in New South Wales for the above position with the Haematology service at Lismore Base Hospital in NNSWLHD.

Applicants should have Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and Royal College of Pathologists of Australia (FRCPA)

and/or other specialist recognition as provided for in the NSW Staff Specialist (State Award). Applicants expecting to be awarded their Fellowship within 3 months may be considered.  If successful, the applicant will not be subsequently eligible to commence their appointment until after the relevant qualifications and requirements are formally completed

The position requires a good working knowledge and experience in current Haematology care. The duties involve the provision of both a Consultation and Admission service for patients admitted to Lismore Base Hospital and will also provide an opportunity for teaching and research.

Lismore Base Hospital is a regional teaching hospital with a growing junior medical officer training program and strong links to Royal North Shore, Prince of Wales and John Hunter Hospitals.  The Hospital and the University Centre for Rural Health have a good student program providing for Medical Students from University of Sydney, University of Wollongong, University of NSW and University of Western Sydney.

The successful candidate must be dedicated to a teamwork philosophy and be able to demonstrate their ability to work as a team member within the facility.

Salary and conditions are in accordance with the NSW Staff Specialist (State Award).

Selection Criteria Eligible for registration as a Specialist Medical Officer with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Authority. Must be registered by time of appointment.

Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Royal College of Pathologists of Australia and/or other specialist recognition as provided for in the Staff Specialist (State) Award

Completed advanced training in Laboratory and Clinical Haematology or equivalent together with evidence of Continuing Medical Education and self monitoring/audit practices that support credentialing to the position.

Sound clinical knowledge in Haematology demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position with demonstrated Clinical Haematology experience in a rural/regional environment.

High level interpersonal and communication skills together with organisational ability, ability to supervise others and demonstrated ability working within a multi disciplinary team.

Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and evidence based best practice.

Demonstrated experience and commitment to teaching and supervision and demonstrated evidence in acquisition of the skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner.
