Purpose of Position

The Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) role is comprised of five domains of practice. It corporates the components of clinical service provision, clinical leadership, research, service planning and implementation, and education. It is expected that the CNC demonstrate activity in each of the domains of practice. It is acknowledged that the focus of practice may vary across the domains, dependent on clinical and planning priorities.  The CNC applies advanced clinical knowledge & skills to paediatric patient care through education, role modeling and consultation.

The CNC will take the responsibility for being the project leader for the implementation of the WCHN strategies in NBMLHD The CNC will promote clinical experience across inpatient facilities, community health, ambulatory care, Emergency Department, outpatient clinics and outreach services throughout NBMLHD. The role liaising across and linking children’s health services across NBMLHD, and more broadly with WCHN partners.


As a nurse with expert knowledge and skills, the CNC will contribute to the decisions and debate within professional associations utilising a primary health care focus, and participate in health policy and decision making. The CNC will maintain and improve his/her own professional level of expertise. The CNC will undertake nursing research within the specialty to advance and improve care delivery

 The CNC may be required to represent the NBMLHD on paediatric issues at other Local Health Districts and at State-wide level.

 The Clinical Nurse Consultant will engage in the development of sustainable paediatric clinical networks within the NSW Child Health Networks and other key stakeholders. The Clinical Nurse Consultant will also participate in the development of Network and Area wide paediatric service planning, implementing relevant NSW Health policies and strategic directions and develop and co-ordinate professional education strategies for acute care an primary health care nursing staff.

  • In this position you will provide expert clinical advice to nursing staff, patients, carers and other health professionals. You will be required to oversee and clinically support the Paediatric Wards & Emergency Departments at Nepean, Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury & Lithgow Hospitals
  • This is a temporary full time position Monday – Friday up to January 2019

Selection Criteria Current division 1 Registered Nurse with AHPRA with a current Driver's Licence, including P1 or above.

Minimum five years full time equivalent post qualification experience, with at least three years full time equivalent experience in Paediatric nursing and post graduate qualifications in Paediatrics.

Demonstrated experience in the development, implementation, review and redevelopment of policy, procedures and education programmes relevant to paediatrics

Demonstrated high level communication and interpersonal skills within the inter-disciplinary and inter-dependant team context and the ability to deliver clear, concise information to parents and carers. Demonstrated understanding of the practice development framework.

Demonstrated proven leadership skills and ability to work within the multidisciplinary team environment to develop service models to meet changing health needs.

Proven ability to implement changes and develop direction in clinical practice by the utilisation of evidence based research

Demonstrated skills in strategic and clinical service planning including an understanding of organisational behaviour, change management and cultural change processes.

Demonstrated clinical expertise in patient-centred consultancy with the ability to work independently.
