Purpose of Position

The Staff Specialist will primarily provide expert medical assessment; consultation and management of patients for Sexual Health and HIV related issues and so must have a demonstrated track record of dedication to clinical consultation. There are no hospital managerial or cost centre responsibilities in this position.

Drug and Alcohol, Mental Health, Breast screening, HIV/AIDS, Public Health, Women's Health, Youth Health, Sexual Health, Imaging and Pathology services are provided at a number of facilities across SESLHD.

 

The position will be primarily located at St George Hospital but may be varied as agreed with the Director of Clinical Services and as approved by MDAAC to other facilities in SESLHD.

The Department of Sexual Health at St George Hospital seeks a motivated, experienced clinician in Sexual Health and HIV medicine for a permanent 0.8FTE Staff Specialist position based at St George Hospital. We seek a qualified candidate with a mature, flexible, committed, well organised and collaborative approach for this complex area of medicine within a small clinical service. Interest in health equity for diverse populations, clinical research and experience in sexual assault medicine, are desirable attributes.

 

This role is primarily clinical, requiring presence for 4 to 5 clinical sessions per week in addition to other duties. The successful applicant must demonstrate a strong work ethic with recent and ongoing commitment to clinical practice in Sexual Health and HIV medicine.

 

There are no managerial or cost centre duties in this position but the successful applicant would be expected to participate in the management and governance of clinical practice at the Short Street Service, as required by the clinical director of the service.

 

 

The short Street Centre is a small (6.3 FTE staff)) but vibrant Sexual Health Service situated on the St George Hospital campus. The service provides high quality consultation, testing and management for sexually transmitted infections and HIV. It is very closely affiliated within the Department of Infectious diseases Immunology and Sexual Health (DIDISH) at St George Hospital, involving active participation weekly Departmental HIV case review meetings and other educational meetings. Outreach services are provided to Sutherland Hospital.  Active participation in ongoing education and clinical research are expected.

 

The position will be primarily located at St George Hospital but may be varied as agreed.

 

The successful candidate may be eligible for a conjoint appointment to the St. George Clinical School with the UNSW Faculty of Medicine.  The level of the appointment will be determined by qualifications and experience.

Selection Criteria 1. Registration or eligible for registration with Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA).

2. Fellowship of the Sexual Health Chapter of RACP and/or equivalent specialist recognition as provided for by the Health Insurance Act 1997 and Staff Specialist award and demonstrated subspecialty training and recency of practice in HIV Medicine and sexual assault medicine.

3. Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice requirements of the position.

4. Proven capacity and/or experience in the provision of effective high quality Sexual Health and HIV clinical services, demonstrated through a strong work ethic, successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of participation in quality improvement activities relevant to the specialty.

5. Demonstrated ongoing commitment to teaching with experience in teaching both undergraduate and post graduate students and other staff of the hospital.

6. Demonstrate the skills and attitudes appropriate as a Senior Medical Practitioner including modelling a high standard of professional behaviour to junior medical staff and all members within the Multidisciplinary team, consistent with a positive work culture.

7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team (within The Department of Infectious Diseases, Immunology and Sexual Health) and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with patients, colleagues, and staff and to work as an effective member of the clinical team across multiple sites. Demonstrated commitment to provision of a high standard of clinical care in the public sector setting.

8. Demonstrated experience in and commitment to research relevant to the role and needs of the Department.
