Purpose of Position

Psychiatrists with recognised postgraduate experience or qualifications in forensic psychiatry may also be able to supervise advanced trainees in forensic psychiatry. The Staff Specialist will also providea a clinical leadership role within the multi-disciplinary team, and be expected to participate in a range of clinical practice and improvement activities.


It is expected that the psychiatrist will become involved in the teaching of postgraduate trainees in psychiatry, and where relevant undergraduate medical students. A conjoint appointment with the UNSW School of Psychiatry, commensurate with experience and qualifications, may be granted (which carries no additional remuneration). An interest in research will be encouraged.


Justice Health & Forensic Mental Health Network is a state-wide Specialty Health Network delivering health care to adults and young people in contact with the forensic mental health and criminal justice systems across community, inpatient and custodial settings.

Selection Criteria Registered, or eligible to be registered, as a specialist psychiatrist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. Formal forensic psychiatry training or forensic psychiatry experience is desirable.

Demonstrated capacity to provide clinical leadership to a multi-disciplinary team.

Ability to carry out assessment and diagnostic interviews.

Knowledge and understanding of the Mental Health Act 2007 and Mental Health (Forensic Provisions) Act 1990.

Ability to effectively communicate with other staff and practitioners, including demonstrated high-level written and oral communication skills.

Ability to use basic computer applications such as email, Intranet, MS Word.
