Purpose of Position

The Neurologist will provide expert medical assessment and management of patients within the Division of Medicine in the Shoalhaven area.


This is a great opportunity to join the Division of Medicine in this newly created role at Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital within the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD). It is expected that the successful applicant will provide neurological care to in-patients and out-patients in the Shoalhaven region.


In addition to providing a high level of care in general neurology, the successful applicant will be expected to work on developing and supporting stroke thrombolysis treatment at Shoalhaven Hospital. It is expected the applicant will work collaboratively with the Neurology Department at Wollongong Hospital and other duties as agreed with the Head of Department. All members of this Unit are expected to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.


The Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital (SDMH) is a busy acute care facility which provides emergency care, medical, surgical and orthopaedic services to around 22,000 patients each year. The hospital has an Intensive Care Unit that incorporates High Dependency and Coronary Care beds and also provides Emergency Department services. As well as these clinical services, the hospital has a busy Obstetric Unit.


The Shoalhaven Hospital is affiliated with the University of Wollongong and supports the training of Nursing, Medical and Allied Health staff. As such there are teaching and research opportunities through the UOW Graduate School of Medicine.

Successful applicants to the role must provide certified documentation of vaccination history and pathology as part of their recruitment documentation. The applicant must be certified as compliant with before employment can commence.

Selection Criteria 1. Registration or eligible for registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australia Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

2. Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians with full membership of or eligibility to become a member of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists and / or specialist recognition as provided for under the Health Insurance Act.

3. Demonstrated excellence in clinical skills, including evidence of changing practice.

4. Demonstrated commitment to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

5. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.

6. Proven ability to work congenially and productively in a team comprised of medical, nursing and allied health colleagues.
