Purpose of Position

The Paediatric Intensive Care Postgraduate Fellow position involves a clinical role within the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, as well as a leadership, educational and research role.   This position provides an opportunity to develop broad skills necessary to function as an independent paediatric intensive care specialist with the support from the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit Consultants.

 

The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit is a 21-bed intensive care ward and a 6 bed close observation unit serving a stand-alone paediatric teaching hospital and the State of New South Wales.  It cares for critically ill children with a diffuse range of medical and surgical conditions, including postoperative cardiac surgery, liver and renal transplantation, trauma and burns.

 

This position in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit is suitable for newly qualified paediatric intensive care specialists with little or no experience as a specialist who wish to develop their skills in a senior role in an academic and clinically supportive environment. The position is designed as a ‘bridge to specialist’.  The postgraduate Fellow will participate in the clinical service of the ICU and the on-call consultant roster; be involved in a number of clinical research projects and policy writing; coordinate and participate in the department’s education program. In addition, the Postgraduate Fellow will be involved in other activities within the unit, for example, quality assurance.

Selection Criteria • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible to be registered with the relevant medical board.

• Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (paediatrics) as provided for in the NSW Staff Specialist (State) Award.

• Experience and training in Paediatric Intensive Care, as practised in a tertiary referral centre, and will possess technical skills commensurate with functioning as an independent Paediatric Intensive Care Specialist.

• Extensive experience in paediatric cardiac intensive care including ECLS.

• Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with other health professionals and to function well in a team environment.

• Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development and demonstrated ability to teach, with a willingness to participate in the teaching of junior medical staff, other clinical staff and medical students.

• Understanding of research methodology or research experience and a willingness to undertake research proposal.

• Demonstrated contribution to the development of hospital services e.g. participation in paediatric junior staff matters, representation on behalf of the hospital, participation in hospital committees preferable.
