Purpose of Position

The Staff Specialist in Medical Oncology will provide expert medical assessment and management of patients within the Department of Medical Oncology, with a focus on gynae-oncology and other tumour streams as required.

Drug and Alcohol, Mental Health, Breast screening, HIV/AIDS, Public Health, Women's Health, Youth Health, Sexual Health, Imaging and Pathology services are provided at a number of facilities across SESLHD.

 

The position will be primarily located at the Prince of Wales Hospital but may be varied as agreed with the Director of Clinical Services and as approved by the Medical & Dental Appointments Advisory Committee to other facilities in SESLHD.

The Department of Medical Oncology, Nelune Comprehensive Cancer Centre at the Prince of Wales Hospital seeks an experienced clinician with Fellowship of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians and subspecialty training in Medical Oncology with a focus on gynae-oncology and other tumour streams as required.  The position being offered is a permanent part-time (0.5 Full Time Equivalent) Staff Specialist. The successful candidate will need to have a strong interest and commitment to working in the public hospital system. Experience of working in a range of multidisciplinary contexts is expected. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate high level communication, commitment to multidisciplinary collaboration, and strong interpersonal skills. The successful candidate must be committed to a high standard of quality and safety in patient care. Strong commitment and prior experience in research, education and management of junior medical staff are essential.

 

The Prince of Wales Hospital is a major teaching hospital based in Sydney's eastern suburbs and serves all of New South Wales. Each year, the Hospital provides care to over 43,000 admitted patients, with over 368,000 occasions of outpatient services. Prince of Wales Hospital is affiliated with UNSW Sydney and the Randwick Campus clinical partners including the Royal Hospital for Women, Sydney Children’s Hospital (Randwick) and several medical research institutes.

The Department of Medical Oncology provides patient care at the Nelune Comprehensive Cancer Centre and inpatient units of the Prince of Wales Hospital. The Haematology Oncology Day Centre in the Cancer Centre has capacity for up to 45 bays shared by Medical Oncology and Clinical Haematology. The inpatient oncology ward has 15 beds. Community support to patients in their homes is provided by the Cancer Outreach Team. Other available services include dietetics, speech pathology, social work and clinical psychology.  Prince of Wales Hospital has implemented the electronic medical record, and MOSAIQ as the oncology information system and for the prescribing of chemotherapy.

The Department is characterised by a commitment to patient-centred, evidence-based, research-led and multidisciplinary care. This is enabled by strong collaboration with Surgical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Palliative Care, Hereditary Cancer Clinic, Youth Cancer Service, Clinical Haematology, Cancer Nursing, Allied Health and other disciplines. Tumour stream-specific multidisciplinary team meetings are the cornerstone of coordinated patient care, and are conducted weekly or fortnightly. Tumour streams at the Nelune Comprehensive Cancer Centre include Breast, Genitourinary, Gynae-oncology, Head and Neck, Lower Gastrointestinal, Upper Gastrointestinal/Hepato-Pancreaticobiliary, Lung, Neuro-oncology, Melanoma and Skin, and Sarcoma.    

The Department has established strong national and international leadership and partnerships in cancer research. The Oncology Clinical Trials Unit located in the Nelune Comprehensive Cancer Centre has been active since 1990. The Unit is staffed by a dedicated team of experienced investigators and research nurses proficient in the conduct of both early phase and randomised clinical trials, and has vast experience with lead site responsibilities. There is also close collaboration with preclinical laboratory research groups at the UNSW Lowy Cancer Research Centre, which is located in close proximity to the Nelune Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

The successful candidate may be eligible for a conjoint appointment to the Prince of Wales Clinical School with the UNSW Faculty of Medicine.  The level of the appointment will be determined by qualifications and experience. 

 

Salary and conditions are in accordance with Staff Specialists (State) Award.

Selection Criteria 1. Registration or eligibility for registration with Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA).

2. Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and/or equivalent specialist recognition as provided for by the Health Insurance Act 1973 and Staff Specialists (State) Award, and demonstrated subspecialty training in Medical Oncology.

3. Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice requirements of the position.

4. Proven capacity and/or experience in the provision of effective high quality services in Medical Oncology, demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of participation in quality improvement activities relevant to the specialty.

5. Demonstrated commitment to teaching with experience in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students and other staff of the hospital.

6. Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate as a senior Medical Practitioner including modelling a high standard of professional behaviour to junior medical and other staff.

7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and staff and to work as an effective member of the clinical team across multiple sites as well as demonstrated commitment to provision of a high standard of clinical care in the public sector setting.

8. Demonstrated experience in and commitment to research relevant to the role and needs of the Department.
