Purpose of Position

Provide clinical management and treatment of patients at the HNEKidsHealth JHCH New Lambton within the scope of practice granted by the Hunter New England Health (HNEH) Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee. The role includes:

  • Providing a safe, efficient and effective Paediatric Pain outpatient service at consultant level to the John Hunter Children's Hospital and Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD)
  • Providing a consultative service to the Emergency Department and other departments within the John Hunter Children's Hospital, including NEXUS
  • Contribute to HNEKidsHealth service direction and planning and the effective management of resources
  • Engage in undergraduate and postgraduate educational activities and staff development programmes within HNEKidsHealth facilities and the John Hunter Children's Hospital
  • Provide professional leadership for health professionals including participation in quality and risk management activities
  • Ensuring the patient receives the best treatment possible, delivers with compassion and care, which results in a positive experience for the child, young person and their family

Staff Specialist in Pain Medicine

John Hunter Children’s Hospital is looking for an experienced Staff Specialist in Pain Medicine to join our team. John Hunter Children’s Hospital is the tertiary referral centre for the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter regions, located roughly two hours drive north of Sydney.

You will provide expertise in the clinical management and treatment of patients of HNEKidsHealth, John Hunter Children’s Hospital pain service within Hunter New England Health District and its surrounding areas. Whilst providing medical leadership and expert advice in the planning, coordination, operation and evaluation in the delivery of medical services ensuring the patient receives the best treatment possible, delivered with compassion and care, which results in a positive experience for the child and their family.

You will have a commitment to undergraduate and post graduate teaching, research and supervision and participate in quality activities, professional development and continuing education.

Selection Criteria Registrable as a medical practitioner with the AHPRA. Fellowship of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, ANZCA and/or equivalent specialty qualifications plus either FRACP (Paediatrics & Child Health) or demonstrated experience delivering pain services to children and families.

Demonstrated training/interest in Paediatric/Adolescent Pain Management

Evidence of and commitment to medical education including the delivery of undergraduate teaching programs. Education skills to enable suitable teaching for medical and other staff including undergraduate students.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team especially during periods of high demand and activity

Demonstrated ability to actively seek out improvements to service delivery, initiating change and consulting with those affected by the changes; allocating resources and proactively managing potential conflicts. Including the commitment to the improvement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and the delivery of culturally sensitive Paediatric Pain services.

Excellent verbal and written communication and people skills and demonstrated planning, organizational and problem solving abilities as well as a high level of computer literacy.

Demonstrated ability to provide high quality compassionate medical care as evidenced by recent practice experience in working congenially and collaboratively as both a leader and member of a multidisciplinary team, and as a provider of services that engender high levels of patient satisfaction and experience

Demonstrated ability as a leader to communicate vision and strategy effectively; inspire and motive others toward the achievement of goals and create a values based organisational culture.
